antipanic
09/04/2005 – 09/24/2005
Christian Schönwälder creates in his single exhibition antipanic a room in a room to hide away and experience.
This room installation condenses the basic idea of domesticity as a form of safety and sealing up from “the outer world”. The room in a room creates a sanctuary in the gallery, based in the 3rd backyard of the Brunnentrasse.
The exhibition room will be used to its full capacity in a compact way, folding tables and shelves expand the usable floor space as a makeshift.
Small space, much in it.
Old and different designed boards of Sprelacart, insulators, used tarpaulins, waterproof and resistant materials constitute the Christian Schönwälder’s vocabulary out of which he scoops to pursue the as necessary regarded strategy of building and doing handicrafts.
It seems like the padded cupboards, security cabins or shrink-wrapped mattresses out of foam material want to be suggestive of a defence against unknown destructive influences from outside. Our time, full of visible and invisible threats, increases newly arising need to build a cave, still well known from childhood times. This need finds its counterpart here, which understands itself as a recommendation.
Christian Schönwälder’s work takes up today’s longing for safety and intensifies it to the absurd.
