Skinnerbox

Leading back on the American psychologist and behavior scientist Burrhus Frederic Skinner, the „Skinner-box“ is equipment providing a basis for conditioning the behavior of small animals. A hungry animal is trapped in a neutral, almost empty cage, equipped with a small lever and a source of light. For the period the light is on, the mechanism registers each contact with the lever and pushes chuck - after a specified amount of contacts - by a small hatch into the cage. By sniffing and also by incidental touching the animals learns that only a certain action in the Skinner-box leads to the supply with fodder.
Christian Schönwälder observes the gallery room as an analogy to the Skinner-box. His work requests the visitor indirectly for action. The sculptures resemble prototype-like machines of yesteryear or seem to be a result of an unknown experiment. It possesses a narrative dimension, whose character determines between scientific documentation and vision. It is dry and inflexible and at the same time possibly trend setting and ingenious. As a kind of illustrative material for yet undreamed and unknown necessities, they become building material for new mental free spaces.
